Adolescent Community

“The teachers must have the greatest respect for the young personality, realizing that in
the soul of the adolescent, great values are hidden, and in the minds of these boys and
girls lies all our hope of future progress and the judgement of ourselves and our times”
-Dr. Maria Montessori
Our Adolescent community provides a unique opportunity for the 12 to 14 year old. Unlike any other program Dr. Montessori’s plan for the adolescent has been adapted to our school setting based on the research and development of AMI. This program is uniquely designed to meet the needs of the 7th and 8th year students who are entering the third plane of development.
Studies show young adolescents need a tremendous amount of physical activity; meaningful physical work, increased autonomy, and an environment suited to the development of a personal vision. BAMH provides surroundings that support the student’s development of a positive and durable self-esteem, involvement with social issues and a stimulating and rigorous curriculum.
Our Adolescent program is a two year humanities based with an academic focus on work in Math, Science, Literacy and Language, Spanish, Art, and Leadership. Developmental, social and physical needs are satisfied with a wide range of activities such as managing their micro-economy, gardening, fitness, performing arts, writing and art expression, culinary arts, stewardship, and day and overnight excursions. The Adolescent Community is an environment of mutual support and trusting relationships.

The world needs more than students who perform well on tests. It needs engaged explorers, thoughtful thinkers, and capable creators. Our Adolescent students work collaboratively, reason deeply, serve their community, and learn to discuss ideas with respect and purpose. These experiences cultivate independence, creativity, strong problem-solving skills, and a meaningful connection to the natural world.
